Sir
Alexander Fleming's discovery of penicillin presented an exciting
challenge for the Mannings people to adapt this new drug for
use in the animal world. In 1948 the company began producing
penicillin intramammaries in its new facility at the southern
end of the city's central business district. Injectable penicillin
for treating blackleg, footrot and other diseases of sheep
and cattle soon followed. The DURAPEN and PROCAL brands, which
have become household names in the rural community, are still
available today.
Since
Stockguard Laboratories (NZ) Ltd's aquisition of the business
in 1987 the company has continued to expand and further
innovative antibiotic products have been developed along
with other veterinary specialties. Among the exciting product
developments are a number of world firsts including:
> A long acting vitamin B12 injection, SMARTShot
> A high strength penicillin only intramammary, INTRACILLIN
and
> An injection to treat multi-quarter mastitis infections
with just one treatment, MASTICILLIN.
Stockguard
Laboratories (NZ) Ltd is a private New Zealand company that
specialises in the development and manufacture of veterinary
products. Stockguard Laboratories (NZ) Ltd is the only manufacturer
of veterinary antibiotic products in New Zealand.
Stockguard
Laboratories (NZ) Ltd has a strong commitment to research
and development to bring through further new innovative
products. Stockguard's valuable contribution at the forefront
of mastitis research and development in New Zealand is now
recognised and supported by government. A successful bid
for funding support under the Grants for Private Sector
Research and Development Scheme will strengthen Stockguard's
ongoing programme to deliver new and improved mastitis treatments.
With
the continued business growth of Stockguard there are now
two companies.
